Miscues hurt Mt. Juliet in loss to Gallatin

"Our kids gave great effort," Bears coach Trey Perry said. "When you've got two teams that are fighting for every inch, when you have a turnover like that in the end zone in a one score game, those kind of things make the difference."

GALLATIN - The Gallatin Green Wave took advantage of some miscues by Mt. Juliet in a 24-17 victory at Calvin Short Field Friday night.

Early in the second quarter, the Green Wave's Jalen Rogan fell on a Bear fumble in the end zone for a touchdown which gave Gallatin a 14-0 advantage. The game's first score came on a 5-yard run by Gallatin's Eric Debow at 6:22 of the first quarter.

"Our kids gave great effort," Bears coach Trey Perry said. "When you've got two teams that are fighting for every inch, when you have a turnover like that in the end zone in a one score game, those kind of things make the difference."

The Bears would make their first strike at 6:40 in the second period as Alex Landis found Ahmad Bradley for a 9-yard score to close the gap to 14-7 in favor of the hosts. Tristan Rogers made a chip shot 25-yard field goal with 5:51 to go before halftime to extend the Gallatin lead to 17-7.

A scoreless third quarter kept the Mt. Juliet faithful cheering and the crowd jumped to its feet when Landis connected with Kyle Smith on a 61-yard pass to set up the second Landis to Bradley touchdown play at 8:56 to play to pull within 17-14.

Debow rumbled in for his second score of the night on a 6-yard push through the middle with 4:13 to play. Jacob Bailey knocked through a 26-yard field goal at just over two minutes remaining for the night's final points.

Penalties were also costly to the Bears, stalling offensive drives and extending a couple for the Green Wave.

"When you look at situations like penalties in a close football game, it takes you off your schedule, it makes the calls harder," Perry said. "In a close game, those are gonna be big and they were tonight."

The Bears will wrap up their season Friday at 7 p.m. when Portland comes to town.
