Juan Giraldo scored near post off a short corner from Martin Lugo in the 49th minute and Georgia Gwinnett held off a late surge from Cumberland, taking a 1-0 victory in men’s soccer action Tuesday at Lindsey Donnell Stadium-Kirk Field.

The Bulldogs (5-12-1) dropped their final regular season and home match of the year and were thoroughly outplayed in the first half, with the Grizzlies (12-4-0) holding a 13-0 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes.

GGC started quickly in the second half and Giraldo’s shot low and just inside the near post, past two sprawling Cumberland defenders, gave the visitors the lead just after the break. From there Cumberland settled down and possessed the ball more, creating chances on the offensive end, especially off set pieces.

Mark Harrison’s header near the goal line was knocked away and Elliot Goodwin’s subsequent blast from 15 yards was cleared away before it reached Georgia Gwinnett keeper Lewis Sharpe, who recorded two saves and used his 6-foot-5 frame to keep crosses from turning into dangerous scoring chances.

Cumberland’s Ian Hamilton made seven saves in the loss and faced 21 total shots from the Grizzlies. The Bulldogs actually outshot GGC, 9-8, in the second half.

The Bulldogs must wait for the remainder of the Mid-South Conference regular season to play out the rest of the week and over the weekend before finding out their opponent for a quarterfinal road match Nov. 9.
