MT. JULIET -- It's not been the easiest season for Mt. Juliet, but the Golden Bears found a way to end the year on a high note Friday night.
The Golden Bears scored 25 points in the first quarter and rolled to a 49-6 rout of Portland. Mt. Juliet finished the season 4-6, 3-4 in the District 9-AAA race.
"This is a good program-win tonight, sending the seniors out with a win," Mt. Juliet coach Trey Perry said. "It's been a tough season. People forget what these seniors have done in the past, 38 wins for that group."
Mt. Juliet scored first on a 16-yard touchdown run by Courtland Douglas less than three minutes into the game, staking itself to a 7-0 lead. Peyton Haynes added an interception return for a touchdown moments later to double the score.
Kyle Mahler's 52-yard touchdown run later in the first quarter pushed the margin to 22-0, and Jacob Bailey closed out the scoring with a field goal.
In the second quarter, Logan Hyder caught a 34-yard touchdown pass from Alex Landis and Bailey added a field goal in the final moments of the first half to give Mt. Juliet a 35-0 cushion at halftime.
The Golden Bears scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Portland (0-10, 0-7) had an 8-yard touchdown run for the Panthers.
It was a great way to end the year.
"On the other end of the spectrum, it's like a jump on the 2014 football season, playing with a lot of people," Perry said. "The freshmen scored the last two touchdowns for us tonight, so that's encouraging."
Perry thinks he has the Bears' plan for the offseason all set.
"We're going to be real humble, real quiet and get back in the weight room and get ready for 2014. I think we have a group here that is ready to get to work," Perry said.
