Volleydawgs swept by Shawnee State

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio – Cumberland hit just .063 as a team compared to .218 from Shawnee State as the Bulldogs fell in straight sets, 3-0, Friday afternoon at the Frank & Janis Waller Gymnasium.

SSU (16-13, 8-8) used a balanced attack with no player recording more than eight kills, but also took advantage of 21 Cumberland (14-17, 5-10) attack errors in the contest.

The Bulldogs looked poised to take the opening set, earning a chance at set point at 24-23. The squad was not able to hang on as Shawnee State answered with three straight points and a 26-24 victory. CU was not so fortunate in the second set, a 25-10 defeat in which the Bulldogs hit -0.263.

CU responded with a better showing in the third set, but ultimately fell, 25-20. Mackenzie Gass led all players with a match-high nine kills in the contest. Her sister, Meghan, led the squad with 15 assists and Kasi Wells added 11 of her own. Laura Peavy paced the team with 10 digs.

Cumberland will face a quick turnaround while remaining in Ohio to face Rio Grande on Saturday at 10 a.m. The Bulldogs defeated the Red Storm, 3-0, in the only matchup between the two teams this season.
