RIO GRANDE, Ohio – Rio Grande’s Chandler Brown recorded a double-double, notching 10 kills and 12 digs as the Red Storm defeated Cumberland 3-2 in a back-and-forth match Saturday at the Newt Oliver Arena.
The Bulldogs (14-18, 5-11) dropped the opening set, 25-21, before responding with a 25-20 victory in the second. Rio (12-15, 6-11) took the thirds set 25-18 but surrendered a 25-23 comeback victory to CU in the fourth.
The Red Storm proved to be too much in the final set, as the squad jumped out to a 5-1 lead and holding on to a 15-8 victory to win the Mid-South Conference match.
Cumberland was led by freshman Abby Shaw who recorded 12 kills with a .229 attack percentage. Mackenzie Gass added 11 kills while Sheridan Jones tacked on nine.
Meghan Gass and Kasi wells combined for 30 assists, 16 and 14, respectively, to lead the squad. Laura Peavy and Jenna Pavan added 11 and 10 digs, respectively, for the Bulldogs.
Cumberland has two games remaining in the regular season before heading to Louisville for the Mid-South Conference Championships beginning Nov. 15. The first of those final two games will feature the nationally-ranked No. 9 Lindsey Wilson. That match is set for Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Columbia, Ky.
