BOONE, N.C. — Robbie Resendiz, Kirk Johnson and Jacob Shirley all pinned their opponents in Cumberland’s 40-16 dual match victory over Anderson University and Billy Ward and Cody Linton posted victories by decision against Appalachian State on Sunday.
The Bulldogs (1-3) defeated NCAA Division II Anderson, 40-16, with the help of three pins and three forfeits. Resendiz defeated Kennan Simmons at 133 by fall at 1:31, while Johnson won by fall at 2:10 over Eric DeAngelis at 165 and Shirley posted a victory by fall at 2:53 against Stephen Wylie at 174. Linton, Scott Stewart and Tyler Smith all picked up six points with wins by forfeit at 184, 197 and 285.
Cumberland dropped a 32-12 decision against Appalachian State, but Ward registered a 7-6 Decision over Vito Pasone at 133 and Linton recorded a 9-2 decision versus Alex Kruklinski at 184. Johnson lost a 7-6 decision to Zack Strickland at 165 and Zeke Hunt dropped a 4-3 decision at 174 to Colin Hedash. Stewart also lost a 7-1 decision to Paul Weiss at 197.
Cumberland will play host to Shorter and Middle Tennessee State in dual matches at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center at 5 p.m. next Tuesday.
Bulldogs drop opening dual matches
CHATTANOOGA — Freshman Billy Ward posted a 4-3 Decision at 133 in the second dual match of the day, as Cumberland opened the season with a pair of outings here on Friday night.
Ward registered the 4-3 decision against Chattanooga’s Nick Soto, but the Bulldogs dropped four matches by technical Fall and two others by fall to the Mocs. Freshman Kirk Johnson dropped a 9-2 Decision to 13th-ranked Corey Mock at 165 and senior Zeke Hunt lost a 5-3 Decision at 184 to UTC’s John Shrader.
In the earlier match, eighth-ranked Wisconsin defeated the Bulldogs, 51-0, with the Badgers posting five pins and three technical fall victories. Freshman Justus Griffith lost a 3-1 Decision to Matthew Cavallaris at 125 and Johnson dropped a 5-2 decision versus Benjamin Cox at 165.
