Cumberland’s Tom Reilly and Shauna Gilpin earned Soccer Player of the Week accolades from the Tennessee Sportswriters Association on Tuesday, netting a golden goal for the Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.
Reilly, a Buckinghamshire, England, native, scored in the final minute of the first overtime period, giving Cumberland’s men a 2-1 victory on the road at the University of the Cumberlands in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Championships. The freshman gave CU its first win of the year in extra time, upping the club's record to 1-6-1. It was the fourth goal of the year for Reilly, all in the last eight outings.
The Bulldogs advanced to the tournament semifinals, taking on third-ranked Lindsey Wilson on Thursday at 5 p.m. in Columbia, Ky.
Gilpin, a St. John’s, Newfoundland, native, scored the first two goals for Cumberland’s women in a 3-1 victory over Bluefield in Saturday's quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Championships. The junior put CU ahead in the 24th minute on assists from Kylie Sanson and Taylor Nay and added her second goal in the 51st minute on an assist from Rhianne Parsons.
Gilpin leads the Bulldogs with 14 goals this season (tied for fourth in the MSC) and ranks second on the club with 33 points. Cumberland, ranked sixth nationally and the No. 1 seed in the conference tourney, will take on St. Catharine on Thursday at noon in Columbia, Ky., in the semifinals.
