Cumberland softball coach Heather Stanfill announced the club’s 2014 schedule this week, which includes 16 home doubleheaders and 36 conference games for the Bulldogs.
Stanfill begins her sixth season at CU after leading the program to the NAIA Championship Opening Round for the first time in program history last season. The Bulldogs return 11 letterwinners, including All-Conference performers Courtney Maynard and Jessica Roper, as well as starters Sydney Broderick, Kaleigh Pearce, Shawnee Kirk, Devon Jamerson, Sarah Murray and Caroline Curran.
Cumberland won three straight games in the Mid-South Conference Championships to earn one of the league’s two automatic berths into the national tournament.
The Bulldogs will open the 2014 campaign with a home doubleheader against Union College on Feb. 18 before traveling to Georgia Gwinnett and Emmanuel. CU will begin Mid-South Conference at Rio Grande and Shawnee State on Feb. 28 and March 1.
The club then plays 14 of its next 18 contests at home taking up most of the month of March, including doubleheaders versus Campbellsville, Bryan, Purdue University-Calumet, Lindsey Wilson, Georgetown College, the University of the Cumberlands and Georgia Gwinnett.
CU hits the road for road twinbills at St. Catharine and Campbellsville before playing 10 straight games at home to begin the month of April, facing Martin Methodist, Virginia Intermont, Pikeville, Bluefield and Tennessee Temple.
Cumberland will to the road for four consecutive doubleheaders in the middle of April before ending the regular season with six straight home games, taking on St. Catharine, Shawnee State and Rio Grande.
The Mid-South Conference Championships will take place May 1-3 in Danville, Ky., and the NAIA Championship Opening Round will be held May 12-14.
