Former Cumberland player Luis Martinez has signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels with an invitation to spring training, according to a recent Los Angeles Times story.
The Angels are in need of organizational catching depth, according to the report. Martinez spent the 2013 season with Baltimore’s Triple-A team at Norfolk, Va., and its Double-A team at Bowie, Md., hitting .257 with a .319 on-base percentage, .346 slugging percentage, one home run and 20 RBIs.
A 12th-round pick of the San Diego Padres in 2007, Martinez has appeared in 32 big-league games, 22 with the Padres in 2011 and 10 with the Texas Rangers in 2012. He will help fill a void left by the departure of Angels Triple-A catcher Luke Carlin, who became a minor league free agent this winter.
