Cumberland director of athletics Ron Pavan announced community and gameday events for the remainder of the 2013-14 basketball season, including a pair of Upward basketball days, the annual Breast Cancer Awareness game and a pair of events in association with Cumberland Student Life.
The Lebanon Upward Basketball League will have teams play at halftime of contests on Jan. 4 (Campbellsville) and Saturday, Feb. 8 (Bluefield). The annual Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Play 4Kay game will also take place on Feb. 8.
Cumberland University Student Life will sponsor games on Jan. 16 and Feb. 6 for local groups with Wilson County Community Help Center for new and gently used coats for children and adults and Soles4Souls.
Six days a week the Wilson County Community Help Center provides emergency assistance in the form of food, clothing, resource education and financial aid to Wilson county residents. The clothing program has provided more than 1,000 coats each year to warm the needy. The WCCHC comes in contact with more residents each week than any other agency in the county. As Wilson County continues to experience a rise in local needs, they feel the strain on assistance funds and rely heavily on help from residents and agencies.
Soles4Souls is a global, not-for-profit institution based in Nashville dedicated to fighting the devastating impact and perpetuation of poverty. The organization advances its anti-poverty mission by collecting new and used shoes and clothes from individuals, schools, faith-based institutions, civic organizations and corporate partners, then distributing those shoes and clothes both via direct donations to people in need and by provisioning qualified micro-enterprise programs designed to create jobs in poor and disadvantaged communities.
Senior Day will take place for the men’s and women’s basketball teams on March 1 and the Competitive Edge Dance Team will perform at halftime of both games that day as well.
Cumberland will return to action Jan. 2, taking on St. Catharine in a doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
