MJ Middle girls take WJB championship

Mt. Juliet Middle’s girls won Walter J. Baird’s Christmas Tournament with two victories last Saturday.

The Lady Bears doubled up Southside in the championship game 28-14 Saturday night after beating Watertown 28-12 that morning in the semifinals.

Against Southside, the Lady Bears roared to an 11-1 first-quarter lead and were up 15-5 at halftime.

Sydney Throneberry threw in eight points for Mt. Juliet while Natalie Sims scored six, Kathryn Bean and Julia Maki each finished with four and Gentry Houston, Alex Houston and Molly Back tossed in two each.

The Lady Bears led Watertown 7-3 in the first quarter before a opening a 21-8 bulge by halftime.

Maki knocked down nine points while Throneberry added eight, Bean five and Sims, Back and Alex Houston two each.

Mt. Juliet will return from the holiday break Jan. 6 when the Lady Bears welcome Christiana to Tommy Martin Gym for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
