Jake Williams, Kyle Delaune and Aric Fernandez each recorded victories by fall as the No. 8 Cumberland wrestling squad erased a 12-point deficit to earn a 34-12 dual win over St. Andrews on Sunday at the Dallas Floyd Recreation Center.
Following a pin by St. Andrews’ Chauncey Foster against Justus Griffith at 125 and a forfeit at 133, Cumberland responded with wins in each of the final eight weight classes to take the easy victory.
Freshman Nate Croley started the comeback at 141 with a 4-0 victory by Decision and junior Ethyn Holbrook followed suit with a 6-3 decision to put the Bulldogs down 12-6.
At 157, Jake Williams took a large lead through the first two periods before recording a win by Fall at the 5:31 mark to tie the score at 12. Sophomore Kirk Johnson gave CU its first lead of the contest with an 8-0 Major Decision at 165.
Freshman Kyle Delaune and sophomore Aric Fernandez gave Cumberland a commanding lead in back-to-back matches at 174 and 184, respectively, each recording victories by Fall.
Redshirt senior Scott Stewart and junior Tyler Smith concluded the dual with Decision wins at 197 and 285 to close out the victory. Stewart won 11-8, and Smith closed with an exciting 5-4 win at heavyweight.
The Bulldogs will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the NWCA National Duals this weekend before returning home for a dual against Campbellsville on Jan. 17.
