SMYRNA — Friendship Christian's bowling team will be going for the school's eighth state championship since 2007 when the Commanders take on Pope John Paul II at 3:15 p.m. today at Smyrna Bowling Center for the Division II championship.

The Commanders advanced to the final with a pair of wins on Friday, knocking off St. Benedict 17-10 and then taking care of McCallie, 19-8. Pope John Paul II advanced with wins over Christian Brothers and University School of Nashville.

In the girls' Division I bracket, Wilson Central won its first state tournament match on Friday, but fell in the semifinal. The Wildcats knocked off Walker Valley 19-8 before losing Hardin County by the same score.

Hardin County will play Columbia for the D-I girls' title today at 8:30.

Friendship's Donny Turner finished fifth in the D-II individual state, losing a 192-162 decision in the second match of the tournament to MBA's Niley Patel. Donelson Christian's Ross Dewey won the title.

If the Commanders win today, it would mark their first title since moving to Division II at the start of the school year. Their previous titles, including six in the last two seasons, came in D-I.
