CONWAY, Ark. — Ethyn Holbrook, Cody Linton and Scott Stewart all placed first in their respective weight classes while Zeke Hunt and Brian Shockley were both second and Kyle Delaune and Tyler Smith each finished third, leading the Cumberland wrestlers at the Mustang Open in Conway, Ark., last Saturday.
Holbrook posted three victories at 141, winning by Decision over Oklahoma’s Josh Durham and Baker University’s Kyle Wilson before receiving a medical forfeit against CU assistant coach Marcus Cobbs in the finals.
Linton registered four wins at 184, starting with a pin of Central Baptist’s Jacob Jasper before three straight major decisions – 9-1 versus Bacone College’s Jose Hernandez, 11-1 over Baker’s William Leone and 9-0 against Missouri Valley’s Wade Aylett in the finals.
Stewart also had four victories at 197, taking a decision against Bacone’s Vincent Opuiyo before pinning Dwayne Jarrett from Arkansas-Little Rock as well as Harold Brown from the University of Texas. In the finals he pinned Missouri Valley’s Carl Lawrence.
Hunt picked up three wins at 174, beginning with a pin against Baker’s Bradley Burnside before posting decisions versus Bacone’s Felipe Nava and teammate Kyle Delaune. In the finals he lost a 9-3 Decision to Oklahoma’s Matt Reed.
Shockley pinned UALR’s Luis Pena at 1:32 before winning decisions over Central Baptist’s Austin Gonzalez and Bacone’s Kyler Kilpatrick. In the finals he lost to Oklahoma’s Shayne Tucker by technical fall, 16-1.
Delaune was part of a crowded CU bracket at 174, with four Bulldogs in the 14-person field. The freshman pinned UALR’s Lance Biggers in the first match and won by decision over Hayden Moore before losing by Decision to Hunt. In the wrestleback he pinned Missouri Valley’s Tilden Edwards at 0:50 and also pinned Ouachita Baptist’s Elyjah Crumpler at 1:22 in the third-place match.
Smith won an 11-2 major decision over Bacone’s Fernando Herrera in his first match but dropping a 4-3 decision in the first extra period to Oklahoma’s Michael Brown. In the wrestleback Smith pinned Central Baptist’s Kurland Parks at 1:36 along with Baker’s Chris Tackett at 6:26. He then won a 3-2 decision over Baker’s Alexander Ekins before picking up a 5-4 Decision in the second extra period over Central Baptist’s John Lopez.
Christian Varner also placed fourth for the Bulldogs, dropping a 7-2 decision in the wrestleback finals. The redshirt freshman pinned UALR’s Troupe Bryant in his first match before losing by fall at 1:31 to Missouri Valley’s Carl Lawrence. In the wrestleback he pinned UALR’s Noah Bailey at 2:39 before the loss to Opuiyo in the third-place match.
Cumberland will compete in the Greyhound Open this coming Saturday in Indianapolis, Ind., before taking on conference-rival Lindsey Wilson in a dual match on Feb. 4.
