CLARKSVILLE — Wilson Central will be represented in 13 of 14 weight classes in the TSSAA state wrestling tournament after the Wildcats won their third straight region championship over the weekend.
Joining the Wildcat 13, six of whom won their weight classes, will be three wrestlers from Mt. Juliet and two from Lebanon.
The 18 Wilson County grapplers finished in the top four of their respective weight classes in the Region 7-AAA tournament at Northwest over the weekend. The Wildcats, winners of Region 5 the two previous years before being moved by TSSAA, cleared second-place Clarksville by 104 ½ points.
Three of Central’s 13 state-bound wrestlers started the season competing on the junior-varsity team.
The rounds of 32, 16 and first and second consolation rounds will be held in the 3 p.m. session Thursday at the Williamson County Agricultural Exposition Arena in Franklin. Match will continue until the finals at 5 p.m. Saturday.
A weight-by-weight look at Wilson County wrestlers in the regional:
Wilson Central’s Nick King won with a 4-2 decision over Springfield’s Jacob Shelton. King posted a 15-4 major decision over Lebanon’s Sean Sesnan in the semifinals. Sesnan took third place, and joined King in Franklin, with a pin of West Creek’s Justin Williams.
Mt. Juliet’s Matthew Helm finished second after losing 4-3 to West Creek’s Kevin Knier in the final. Central’s Caleb Berta took third by pinning Lebanon’s Jordan Benford in 3:08 of the consolation final. All three Wilson County grapplers advanced to state.
Wilson Central’s Christian Cerrito won with a 16-0 technical fall over West Creek’s Charlie Rocha. Mt. Juliet’s Jalen Henry was ousted by Rossview’s Anthony Cole 14-11, in the consolation semifinals while, on the other side, Lebanon’s Austin Plumlee was pinned by Beech’s Landon Butler in 2:01.
Central’s Lane Dickeson won this class with an 8-2 decision over Mt. Juliet’s Zackrey Wilkins in the final. Both advanced.
Austin Richard of Central pinned Beech’s Tristan Hackett in 1:53 of the championship match. Lebanon’s Austin Reynolds was pinned by Clarksville’s Dakarri Wiggins in 3:55 in the consolation quarterfinals. Mt. Juliet’s Colin Williams was ousted a round earlier by Hendersonville’s Zack Jones by pin in 4:47.
Eddie Small took third place for Wilson Central with a 6-3 decision over Rossview’s Christopher Beatty, who pinned Lebanon’s Dustin Garner in 3:48 in the consolation semifinals. Small pinned Mt. Juliet’s Austin Downing in 1:46 in the other semi.
Wilson Central’s Andy Hamrick, who moved up when John Michael Jenkinson was lost for the season a week earlier in the state duals, took third place by pinning Hendersonville’s Conlan Dile in 3:53. Dile had just edged Mt. Juliet’s Justin Charest 3-2 in the consolation semifinals.
Mike Binns won this class for Wilson Central with a 12-3 major decision over Clarksville’s Tom Huddleston. Mt. Juliet’s Danyon Edens took third with a 12-0 major decision over Northwest’s Walter Leslie to join Binns at state. Lebanon’s Jed Hardy was pinned by Rossview’s Elijah Abdo in 54 seconds in the consolation quarterfinals.
Zach Linton of Wilson Central, who moved up when returning state qualifier John Davidson suffered a rib injury early last month, took fourth place after losing to Clarksville’s Danny James 6-3. Lebanon and Mt. Juliet did not enter a wrestler in this class.
Wilson Central’s Ty Georgeadis defeated West Creek’s Nicholas Raines 7-5 to finish third. Georgeadis edged Mt. Juliet’s Jacob O’Brien 5-4 in the consolation semifinals. Lebanon’s Jackson Gray was pinned in 55 seconds by Kenwood’s Michael Graham in the third round of the consolations.
Perry Baltz of Central was pinned by Kenwood’s Hamza Yunis in 1:06 of the final. Lebanon’s Malik Weir won a 12-3 major decision to oust Mt. Juliet’s Samuel Mathis before dropping a 3-1 consolation semifinal decision to West Creek’s Jacob Kuhns.
Ben Iles, who started the year wrestling JV at 170 before having to bulk up with the 195 starter quit the team, finished third by pinning Kenwood’s Omar Unis in four minutes. Yunis had just edged Lebanon’s Justin Brown 9-8 in the consolation semifinals. Mt. Juliet’s Asher Benson was pinned in the other semi by Iles in 3:16.
Central’s John Kramer continued his domination of this weight by pinning West Creek’s Jule Pace in 4:51 to take the title. Lebanon’s J.W. Baird was pinned by Hendersonville’s Joseph Bresson in the consolation semifinals.225
The only weight where Wilson County will not be represented at state. Central’s Christian Frans pinned Lebanon’s Chris Stickler in 2:20 in the opening round. Stickler was pinned by Hendersonville’s Reed Robinson in 5:32 in the wrestleback while Wills was pinned by Rossview’s Harry Gaston in 3:37 on the other side.
