SPARTA — Pitching led Walter J. Baird’s baseball team to a 3-1 start to the season in the Sparta Preseason Tournament.
Dylan Alsup and Eli McDearman combined for a four-inning combined no-hitter in a 13-0 shutout of Avery Trace in Friday night’s opener. Alsup drove in four runs on two hits and struck out three in as many innings. McDearman whiffed the side in the fourth.
Baird followed with a 4-1 win over Cornerstone as A.J. Fletcher fired three innings for the win in the five-inning game. McDearman and Alsup each had a pair of hits.
The Blue Devils came back the next afternoon and rode sixth-grader Brady Chappel’s no-hitter in a 5-0 win over Fentress County. Chappel struck out nine and walked none in his middle-school debut. He hit one batter and another reached on an error.
Overton County won the championship with a 6-3 win in the final by breaking a 2-2 tie with three runs in the third inning as Fletcher gave up four walks and a single in the inning.
Baird was iced out of Monday’s home opener against Winfree Bryant. The teams will try again at 4 p.m. Wednesday before Southside visits WJB 24 hours later.
Friendship shuts out Southside
Matthew Swann and Addison Fakes combined on a two-hit shutout Saturday as Friendship Christian shut out visiting Southside 3-0.
Swann fired the first four innings, striking out five. Fakes fanned four over the final two frames.
Gavin Sellars struck out six in 3 2/3 innings for Southside.
Hanley Sobieszczyk had three of Friendship’s four hits as the Commanders scored once in the third inning and twice in the fourth.
