CU women's tennis posts 5-4 win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Cumberland swept the top three singles matches and doubles at the top two spots, as the 18th-ranked Bulldogs posted a 5-4 victory over Belhaven in women’s tennis action Friday at the Auburn Montgomery Spring Invitational.

The Bulldogs defaulted at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles and lost in a third-set tiebreaker at No. 5 singles as well, but the top three players in the lineup – Angelica Sepulveda, Alena Gizdić and Antea Dedić – all won in singles and the trio, along with Franki Jecker – posted doubles win to provide the winning points in the team’s first victory of the Gizdić season.

Dedić and Dedić defeated Stephanie Smith and Elizabeth Chrestman, 8-1, at No. 1 doubles and Sepulveda and Jecker posted an 8-5 win at No. 2 over Rachel Jeffcoat and Mary Lichlyter.

In singles Sepulveda registered a 6-1, 6-0, victory against Smith at No. 1, while Gizdić recorded a 6-0, 6-2, win at No. 2 versus Katherine Campbell and Dedić collected a 6-2, 7-5, triumph over Lichlyter at No. 3.

Jeffcoat defeated Jecker, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 4 and Chrestman outlasted Tais Lacerda Bezerra, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (3), at No. 5.

Cumberland will face 14th-ranked Coastal Georgia at 9 a.m. today.

Men defeat No. 8 Belhaven

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Antonio Manuel Marcelo and Diogo Soares both won in singles and doubles and seventh-ranked Cumberland held off No. 8 Belhaven in men’s tennis action Friday at the Auburn Montgomery Spring Invitational.

The Bulldogs (1-2) won a pair of the doubles matches and split the singles outings, all in straight sets, and advanced to face ninth-ranked Xavier [LA] University today at noon.

Andres Burgos and Pedro Rodrigues posted an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Daniel Prado and David Mejia, but Belhaven’s Andre Borghi and Enrico Patriarca registered an 8-6 win at No. 2 versus Pablo Borrero and Garry Tokas. Marcelo and Soares outlasted Nikita Lisov and Jefferson Nino, 9-8, at No. 1, giving the Bulldogs an early lead.

In singles Borrero collected a 6-1, 6-1, victory at No. 3 against Nino and Soares recorded a 7-5, 6-2, win at No. 4 versus Prado. Manuel registered a 7-5, 6-4, triumph over Borghi, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 1.

Belhaven’s Lisov defeated Rodrigues, 6-2, 7-6, at No. 2, while BU’s Patriarca won by the same score at No. 6 against Tokas and Mejia outlasted Burgos at No. 5, 3-6, 7-5, 10-4.
