CU men's tennis falls to No. 1 Embry-Riddle

Women also drop decision at Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Andres Burgos and Garry Tokas each picked up singles victories, but top-ranked Embry-Riddle won all three doubles matches and the top four singles outings, three of them in three sets, in a 7-2 victory over No. 7 Cumberland in men’s tennis action Tuesday.

The Bulldogs (1-4) will open the home schedule next week with Wednesday’s match against Graceland at 1 p.m. at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.

The Eagles (7-2) won all three doubles matches, starting with top-ranked Simon Felix and Deni Zmak defeated Antonio Manuel Marcelo and Diogo Soares, 8-3 at No. 1. Patrick Besch and Jaime Sanchez-Canama posted an 8-2 win at No. 2 versus Pedro Rodrigues and Burgos and Juan Verberne and Miguel Lopez Gomez registered an 8-6 victory at No. 3 versus Pablo Borrero and Tokas.

In singles Zmak, also ranked No. 1, outlasted 21st-ranked Marcelo, 6-3, 4-6, 6-1, and Sanchez-Canama collected a 6-0, 6-0, win over Rodrigues at No. 2. Eighteenth-ranked Felix posted a three-set win against Borrero at No. 3, winning 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, and Besch also was victorious in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, versus Soares at No. 4.

Burgos won his match at No. 5 over Lopez Gomez, 6-3, 4-6, 10-6, while Tokas posted a 7-5, 6-0, victory against Verberne at No. 6.

Women also drop decision at Embry-Riddle

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Seventh-ranked Embry-Riddle posted a pair of three-set singles victories but split the two contested doubles outings, with Angelica Sepulveda and Franki Jecker picking up 18th-ranked Cumberland’s only point in a 8-1 CU loss Tuesday in women’s tennis action.

Sepulveda and Jecker defeated Paolo Montero and Anna Gotz, 8-6, at No. 2 before ERAU’s top-ranked Hui-I Huang and Kristina Marova posted the same score in a victory at No. 1 over Alena Gizdić and Antea Dedić.

Eva Vilar put the Eagles ahead, 3-1, with a 6-1, 6-1, win at No. 4 singles over Jecker and Huang, ranked ninth nationally, in singles, defeated Sepulveda, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1. Marova, ranked No. 27, outlasted Dedić, 3-6, 6-0, 10-7, at No. 3, clinching the match for ERAU, and Gotz registered a 6-7 (2), 6-4, 10-8, victory against 38th-ranked Gizdić at No. 2. Paula Oritz Couder also won 6-0, 6-1, versus Tais Lacerda Bezerra at No. 5 for Embry-Riddle.
