CU’s Soares, Marcelo ranked in ITA tennis poll

Sepulveda, Gizdić move into women’s rankings

Cumberland junior Antonio Manuel Marcelo is ranked in singles and doubles and freshman Diogo Soares is ranked in doubles in the first ITA NAIA college tennis rankings of 2014, as announced by the national office.

Marcelo, a two-time All-American for the Bulldogs, has posted a 3-2 mark in dual match singles this spring, including straight-set victories over Eastern Kentucky’s Alex Alvaro and Belhaven’s Andre Borghi. He also defeated Xavier’s Kyle Montrel in three sets. The Cascais, Portugal, native is ranked 16th in the country in singles, up five spots from his preseason ranking in November.

Marcelo and Soares have posted a 2-1 record in doubles and are ranked 10th nationally. The duo has defeated Belhaven’s Nikita Lisov and Jefferson Nino and Xavier’s Nikita Soifer and Montrel. Soares, a native of Lisbon, Portugal, has also compiled a 3-2 singles record as well.

Cumberland, ranked seventh nationally, will open the home schedule today against No. 19 Graceland at 1 p.m. at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.

Sepulveda, Gizdić move into women’s rankings

Cumberland sophomore Angelica Sepulveda is ranked in singles and doubles and junior Alena Gizdić is ranked in doubles in the first ITA NAIA college tennis rankings of 2014, as announced by the national office.

Sepulveda has registered three wins this season in singles, posting straight-set victories over Belmont’s Stephanie Smith, Coastal Georgia’s Elektra Hunter and Martin Methodist’s Maria Charrys. The Bucaramanga, Colombia is ranked 32nd nationally in singles and has collected five straight doubles victories.

Gizdić has collected four singles wins and three doubles victories and is ranked 23rd in the nation in doubles.

Cumberland, which moved up three spots to No. 15 in this week’s NAIA women’s tennis coaches’ top 25 poll, will open the home schedule today versus Graceland at 1 p.m. at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.
