HENDERSONVILLE — Jackson Arnold spun a four-hit shutout Tuesday night as Lebanon opened its District 9-AAA baseball schedule with a 5-0 win at Beech.

Arnold walked two and struck out eight. All four Beech hits were singles as the Blue Devils climbed to 3-4.

Lebanon scored twice in the second inning and three times in the sixth as the Blue Devils finished with seven hits, including a pair of singles by Caleb Young and a double by Arnold. Young, Nolan Chambers and Nick Sanders each drove in a run as Beech committed five errors.

The Blue Devils will play host to Watertown at 6 p.m. Thursday in their home opener which will also begin the Wilson County Invitational.

Friendship gets first win in home opener

Friendship Christian opened its home schedule Tuesday night with a 5-3 win over former longtime district rival Gordonsville.

The Commanders, last year’s Class A state champions before moving to Division II-A this season, opened the year last week with an 0-4 trip to Gulf Shores, Ala.

Jackson Vance drove in three runs on two singles – a two-run hit in the first and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Cody Walker collected RBI singles in the fourth and sixth.

Michael Hawks, who tripled and scored in the sixth, picked up the win by pitching five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with eight strikeouts and two hit batters. Steven Hollis, who had a pair of singles, gave up a run in the sixth but finished the final two innings for the save.

Joseph McNamee singled to wrap up Friendship’s eight-hit attack.

Friendship will open the Wilson County Invitational tonight when DeKalb County visits for a 6 p.m. game, replacing a Thursday game with Smith County.

Wildcats return home from 1-3 trip

GULF SHORES, Ala. — Wilson Central opened its baseball season last week by going 1-3.

Playing without left-handed pitcher A.J. Franklin, the Vanderbilt-commitment who was playing with the Wildcat basketball in the state tournament, Central lost to Petal, Brandon and Northwest Rankin, all from Mississippi, before beating host Gulf Shores 12-2 in the finale.

Junior Kyle Schmitt got the win against Gulf Shores. Senior Kyle Hubbuch punctuated the win with a grand slam home run.

Central will take on Hendersonville at 7 p.m. tonight in the District 9-AAA opener before starting the Wilson County Invitational on Thursday.
