PORTLAND — Tana Whited’s RBI double broke an eighth-inning tie as Friendship Christian outscored Portland 8-6 Wednesday.
Whited’s hit was followed by Brittney Petry’s RBI groundout to the pitcher.
Courtney Petty pitched seven innings, striking out six, for the win. Kendall Kelsh tossed the bottom of the eighth for the save as the Lady Commanders climbed to 5-4.
Whited drove in three runs on four hits, including two doubles.
Friendship will play host to new East-Middle District 1-A rival Ezell-Harding, the defending Division II-A state champions, in the Lady Commanders’ home opener at 5 p.m. today.
Lady Wildcats fall 9-5 at Smyrna
SMYRNA — Wilson Central lost to defending Class AAA softball champion Smyrna 9-5 Tuesday night.
The Lady Bulldogs broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the third inning and broke the game open with five in the fourth. The Lady Wildcats tried to climb back into the contest with three in the sixth and one in the seventh as Central slipped to 8-7.
The visitors grabbed a 1-0 lead out of the gate when Kelsey Tomlin was hit by a pitch, was sacrificed to second by Keily Preston and scored on Katie Eakes’ single.
Morgan Powell, Brittany Wiseman and Claire Smith scored in the Central sixth. Eakes’ second RBI of the night sent Tomlin home in the seventh.
Eakes and Wiseman each had two hits and Tomlin, Powell, Smith and Karlie Odum one apiece as Central matched Smyrna’s eight hits.
Mackenzie Prince was the winning pitcher while Central’s Hannah Bodenhorn fell to 4-4.
