CU’s Garrett, Botts tie for second in opening tourney

OLD HICKORY — Sophomore Ryan Botts shot a second-round one-over par 72 and Botts and senior Austin Garrett each tied for second, while Cumberland tied for second as a team at the fifth annual Trevecca Spring Invitational on Tuesday at Old Hickory Country Club.

Botts posted the second best round of the day and moved up 14 spots in the second round. The Lebanon native led the field in scoring on the par-5’s at four-under and also ranked No. 1 in birdies with eight.

Garrett led the tournament with 26 pars and shot four-over par 75. He and Botts finished one shot behind Tennessee Wesleyan’s Josh Wheeler for individual medalist honors.

Cedarville’s Taylor Holt carded the low round of the day with an even-par 71, followed by Botts’ 72 and Middle Tennessee’s Connor Slane’s 73. Wheeler shot 74 and Garrett was in a group of seven players at 75.

Freshman Zach Johnson was also in the group at four-over par 75, tying for 13th overall, while sophomore Peyton Broyles recorded a second straight 80 (t39th) and freshman Jake Dailey shot 85 (t55th).

Cumberland will play again next Monday and Tuesday at the Mid-South Conference Spring Invitational at Lake Cumberland Golf Club in Jamestown, Ky.

Legge places third, Hogan 14th at Tennessee Wesleyan

NIOTA — Junior Katie Legge placed third with a second-round 82 and sophomore Quincy Hogan finished 14th after shooting 85 in the final round, leading the Cumberland women’s golf team at the Tennessee Wesleyan Spring Invitational on Tuesday at Springbrook Golf and Country Club.

Legge carded rounds of 83-82 on the par-72, 5,817-yard Springbrook course and moved up four spots, finishing two spots behind Tennessee Wesleyan’s Logan Cass and 10 shots back of tourney winner Southeastern’s Andrea Lopez.

Hogan improved her score by six shots and tied for 14th overall after shooting 85, while senior Kayla Smith tied for 17th, carding a second-round 92. Freshman Kaleigh Chitwood also registered a final-round 85 and placed 21st overall.

Cumberland will play again next Monday and Tuesday at the Mid-South Conference Spring Invitational at Lake Cumberland Golf Club in Jamestown, Ky
