Blue Devils drop 4-1 decision in Classic

FCS sweeps St. Andrew’s in D-II District 1-A debut Saints outscore Stratford 15-13

MURFREESBORO — Lebanon dropped its Warrior Classic opener to Grissom [Ala.] 4-1 Thursday at Siegel.

Grissom broke a scoreless tie with two runs in the top of the fifth inning and broke it open with two in the sixth after the Blue Devils cut the lead in half.

Dawson Hamilton pitched the first five innings-plus and took the loss, allowing all four runs [just two earned] on all eight hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Tristan Warden and Nolan Chambers split the final two frames.

Hamilton’s fifth-inning fielder’s choice drove in Jackson Arnold with Lebanon’s run.

Nick Sanders doubled twice and Arnold once as the Blue Devils finished with four hits in slipping to 7-6.

Lebanon will continue Classic play today at Mt. Juliet when the Blue Devils battle Dobyns Bennett at 5:30 p.m.

FCS sweeps St. Andrew’s in D-II District 1-A debut

SEWANEE — Friendship Christian jumped into the East-Middle District 1-A waters Thursday and the Commanders found those waters to their liking, sweeping St. Andrew’s-Sewanee 13-0 and 14-0.

Senior left-hander Michael Hawks, a key component last year when the Commanders won the state championship on their way out of Division I, scattered two hits and two walks with 10 strikeouts in the five-inning opener.

He was backed by a 10-hit attack. Jackson Vance had three of the hits, including a two-run double. Cody Walker hit an RBI double and Colton Gaines a double and run-scoring single as both had two hits.

Milam Copeland cracked a two-run double and Steven Hollis and Joseph McNamee an RBI single each.

Freshman right-hander Heath Johnson held St. Andrew’s to one hit in the five-inning nightcap as the Commanders climbed to 4-8 for the season in sweeping their district openers. He struck out seven and walked none.

Friendship finished with nine hits, including two singles and an RBI each from McNamee and Vance. Jacob Self supplied a two-run double and freshman Jordan McNamee and Case Ransey a two-run single each. Marshall Taylor turned in an RBI double, Gaines a single and Walker a bases-loaded walk.

FCS is scheduled to travel to Macon County today for a 4 p.m. game.

Saints outscore Stratford 15-13

NASHVILLE — Mt. Juliet Christian outscored host Stratford 15-13 Thursaday.

Elliott Lee drove in two runs on a single and a solo homer for the Saints while Peyton Sloan had three RBI on a double and a single. Zach Jones knocked in a pair of scores on a couple of singles as Mt. Juliet Christian collected 11 hits.

Stratford finished with 15 hits off winning pitcher Michael Gallione and closer Andy Pitman, who picked up the save as the Saints improved to 5-5.

Mt. Juliet Christian will next travel to Friendship Christian on Monday for an East-Middle District 1-A game.
