FCS edges Lebanon 3-2

Late homer puts Goodpasture out of Watertown’s reach
Apr 4, 2014

After Lebanon and Friendship Christian traded first-inning home runs, the pitchers settled down and the Lady Commanders got a 3-2 win Thursday without hitting the ball out of the infield in breaking the fifth-inning tie.

Kelsi Dickey beat the throw from the hole to score Taylor Patterson, who had walked and moved up on Brooke Eakes’ sacrifice bunt and Courtney Petty’s fielder’s choice.

Petty allowed five hits and five while striking out five as the Lady Commanders climbed to 13-6.

But she started in a 2-0 hole as Megan Brown opened the game with a walk and scored on Katlin Eakes’ home run.

Friendship followed the same formula in the bottom of the first as Brooke Eakes walked and came home on Tana Whited’s blast over the left-field fence.

The Lady Commanders also finished with five hits off Anna Smallwood, who worked the full six innings.

Friendship is scheduled to travel to Cookeville’s Cain Creek Park today for the Macon County Invitational. The Lady Commanders will face DeKalb County at 4 p.m. and Livingston Academy at 5:30.

Lebanon is scheduled to travel to Clarksville for the Play it Again Sports Tournament.

Late homer puts Goodpasture out of Watertown’s reach

MADISON — Goodpasture is one of the dominant schools in small-school softball, having won nine state championships in Classes A and AA and Division II from 1996-2011.

But the Lady Cougars, in their first year in District 8-A, had a dog fight with Watertown on Thursday until a Megan Morrow three-run homer with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning put the home team out of reach in an 8-4 win.

Losing pitcher Tiffany Tomlinson gave up 13 hits but had two of the Tigerettes’ nine hits, including a double, and drove in two runs against Tennessee State-signee Cariona Hassell. McKay Hill also had a pair of singles as Watertown slipped to 7-5 for the season and 1-1 in the district.

The teams will hook up again next Thursday at Watertown’s Three Forks Park.
