MT. JULIET — Morgan Powell held Mt. Juliet to three hits Thursday in pitching Wilson Central to a 2-0 shutout in District 9-AAA softball.

Powell struck out seven and got nine flyouts in outdueling Savannah Sanders, who surrendered seven hits and no walks while whiffing 12 in suffering her first loss of the season.

Brittany Wiseman reached Sanders for a fourth-inning home run.

Powell singled in the Central sixth. Her courtesy runner, Kelsey Tomlin, came home from first base on a Katie Eakes double as the Lady Wildcats climbed to 16-14 for the season, 4-1 in District 9-AAA. Their loss was a 1-0 setback at home to Mt. Juliet.

Mt. Juliet’s Ashton Stowe and Shelby Woodard singled in the first inning. But Stowe was thrown out at the plate while trying to score on a throwing error on her steal of third.

Kelsie Craighead walked and Emily Bombard reached on an error in the Mt. Juliet sixth. A sacrifice bunt moved them into scoring position, but Powell induced back-to-back infield popouts.

“Give Wilson Central credit that they got the timely hits and we didn’t,” Mt. Juliet coach Brad Rowlett said after his Lady Bears fell to 15-3, 4-1. “It was an exciting game to watch and we know we will see them again. Hopefully we learned from our experiences tonight and we will be more prepared mentally and physically next time.”

Mt. Juliet will travel to Knoxville today for the Gibbs Tournament. The Lady Bears  will face host Gibbs at 7 p.m. CDT and Maryville at 8:30 before coming back Saturday for a 9:30 a.m. meeting with Grace Christian. The elimination round will follow.
