CU men's tennis wins 11th straight

Sixth-ranked Cumberland posted two doubles wins and five singles victories, defeating Bethel 7-2 in men’s tennis action in the final regular season match for the Bulldogs on Tuesday at the Tommy Gray Memorial Courts.

Cumberland (12-4) won its 11th straight match overall and head into this week’s Mid-South Conference Championships as the No. 1 seed after claiming the regular season conference title this past weekend. The Bulldogs will open play in the tournament at 1 p.m. Thursday against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.

CU’s Pablo Borrero and Andres Burgos registered an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles over Travis Hyman and Nikola Slavik and Diogo Soares and Garry Tokas claimed an 8-5 win versus Joshua Barrett Phelps and Paolo Vecchi at No. 3. Bethel’s Peter Baca and Robin Demasse recorded an 8-5 triumph at No. 1 against Antonio Manuel Marcelo and Pedro Rodrigues.

Baca, ranked 24th nationally in singles, collected a 6-4, 7-5, victory at No. 1 over 12th-ranked Marcelo, but the Bulldogs won the other five singles outings, including four in straight sets.

Borrero posted a 6-2, 6-3, win against Demasse at No. 2, while Rodrigues defeated Vecchi, 6-0, 6-1, at No. 3 and Soares registered a 6-1, 6-1, victory at No. 4 versus Slavik. Burgos came back from a set down to record a 6-7, 6-3, 6-0, win over Hyman at No. 5 and Tokas posted a 6-4, 6-2, victory at No. 6 versus Phelps.

CU’s Gizdić garners MSC Player of the Week accolades

Cumberland’s Alena Gizdić earned Mid-South Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week accolades on Tuesday after posting five wins in five matches last week for the Bulldogs.

The Split, Croatia, native defeated Campbellsville's Gleidys Salazar, 6-2, 7-5, and did not lose a game in wins over Bluefield's Rebecca Havens and Pikeville's Mounia Sami.

Gizdić and doubles partner Antea Dedić posted victories over Campbellsville’s Megan Charity and Haley Dallas and Bluefield’s Casey Germain and Rebecca Havens. She is now 12-5 in singles and 11-6 in singles this academic year.

Cumberland will take on the University of the Cumberlands in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Championships at 8 a.m. DT on Thursday at Georgetown College’s Lackey Tennis Center.

Borrero earns MSC Men’s Player of the Week honors

Cumberland’s Pablo Borrero was named the Mid-South Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week on Tuesday after winning all six of his matches last week for the Bulldogs.

Borrero improved his dual match record to 11-3 with three singles victories and also won all three of his doubles outings, upping that record to 9-6. The Pereira, Colombia, native defeated Campbellsville's Alfredo Soriano in a super tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-4, 10-4, Bluefield's Markel Aramberri in a pro set and Pikeville's Francois Billet, 6-3, 7-5, in singles.

Borrero and doubles partner Andres Burgos improved to 9-1 with their three wins, defeating Campbellsville’s Pontus Blom and Soriano, Bluefield’s Carlton Tugman and James Gunn and Pikeville’s Connor Smith and Billet. Cumberland won the Mid-South Conference regular season championship with Saturday's victory over Pikeville, the program's fourth MSC crown but first since 1999.

The Bulldogs will begin play in the Mid-South Conference Championships on Thursday at Brooking Park in Georgetown, Ky., against a yet-to-be-determined opponent.
