NASHVILLE — Friendship Christian scored three spots in the fifth and seventh innings Tuesday as last year’s Class A state champions advanced to four more games in the Division II-A tournament with a 7-3 win at Franklin Road Academy in the opening round of the East-Middle Region tournament.
FRA led 3-1 before the Commanders scored three in the fifth on Cody Walker’s RBI double and Colton Gaines’ two-run single.
Milam Copeland’s RBI single and Jordan McNamee’s two-run single in the seventh sealed Friendship’s 17th win against 15 losses.
The rest of the region will shift to Donelson Christian where Friendship will face Knoxville Webb at 7 p.m. tonight with the winner to play host to a best-of-three sectional next week while the loser will go on the road.
Michael Hawks scattered eight hits over the full seven innings with three walks and three strikeouts for Friendship.
Jackson Vance’s RBI single pulled Friendship into a 1-1 tie in the third inning. FRA took a 1-0 lead in the second and a 3-1 advantage in the fourth.
Friendship finished with 13 hits, including a double and single each by Walker and Copeland and two singles apiece by Hawks, Gaines and Marshall Taylor.
Central ousts Hendersonville, reaches district final vs. Beech, region
HENDERSONVILLE — Wilson Central emerged from the Hendersonville bracket of the District 9-AAA baseball tournament with a 5-2 win over the host Commandos Monday night at Drakes Creek Park.
The Wildcats [22-12] will play for the league championship at 7 p.m. tonight and, for the first time in years, Mt. Juliet won’t be there. Beech won the Mt. Juliet bracket by eliminating the Golden Bears 5-2 and will play host to Central.
Wednesday’s winner will play host to a first-round Region 5-AAA game next Monday while the loser goes on the road.
Monday’s game was scoreless until Kyle Hubbuch hit an RBI double and Jake Lefler a run-scoring single in the fourth.
Cullen Smith singled in a fifth-inning run. Ben Spradley spanked an RBI double in the sixth. Colten Morris had Central’s fifth hit.
Lefler pitched 6 2/3 innings for the win, allowing five hits. He had a shutout going until the Commandos scored both their runs in the top of the seventh.
