Mt. Juliet Christian School coach Mike Kittrell is organizing a five-tournament series at Old Hickory Lake

Youth fishing tournament: Mt. Juliet Christian School coach Mike Kittrell is organizing a five-tournament series at Old Hickory Lake as part of the USA Bassin Next Generation Trail for youth fishermen.

The tournament dates are May 17, May 31, June 21, July 19 and Aug. 9.

Youngsters 18 and under are eligible and each must be accompanied by an adult angler.

Local winners advance to further competition, with scholarship funds in the offering.

"I got involved because my son Caylor loves fishing, and has fished some tournaments," Kittrell said. "This is a great event for youngsters."

Local angler wins:  Mt. Juliet's Lauren Prosser-Crecelius won the recent LBAA Tournament on Old Hickory Lake. Her two-day catch totaled 21.8 pounds.

The LBBA's next tournament is July 18-19 on Kentucky Lake.

Top shot: Brian Lettrich missed only one of 50 shots to win the weekly trap shoot at the Cedar City Gun Club.

More bear hunting: The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency has proposed expanding bear season into 15 new counties, including portions of Cumberland and Fentress.

In recent years black bears have expanded their range from a few traditional East Tennessee counties, migrating west.

Interscholastic shooting team: An interscholastic trap-shooting team for Wilson County  youngsters is being organized.

The team, which will be known as the Cedar City Straights, is open to youngsters age nine through high school, and will compete in state, regional and national competitions. Training will be held at the Cedar City Gun Club.

Friends of NRA recently made a donation to help fund the effort.
