While some Cumberland players wait to hear their names called in the Major League Baseball draft which began Thursday night, some former Bulldogs drafted in recent years are enjoying all-star success and are moving up the minor-league ladder.

Left-handed pitcher Will Locante has been named to the Midwest League All-Star team from the South Bend Silver Hawks, the Class A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Locante is 2-0 with a 1.99 earned-run average and a save in 18 relief appearances covering 22 2/3 innings. He has walked 13 and struck out 19.

The Midwest League All-Star game will be played June 17 in Comstock Park, Mich.

Another former Cumberland left-hander, Chipper Smith, was recently promoted to the AA Jacksonville Suns of the Southern League by the Miami Marlins.

He combined to pitch a shutout of Pensacola on Sunday, giving him a 2-0 record  and a 1.14 ERA with the Suns in four starts covering 23 2/3 innings. He has walked five and fanned 18.

Smith was promoted after posting a 1.65 ERA despite only a 1-3 won-loss record at Class-A Jupiter of the Florida State League.

He is scheduled to start tonight in Jacksonville against the Tennessee Smokies.

Veteran catcher Luis Martinez is sharing catching duties with the AAA Salt Lake Bees of the Pacific Coast League in the Los Angeles Angels system. He was batting .259 with three homers and 14 RBI in 112 at bats in 31 games going into Thursday night’s game at home against Sacramento

He singled and walked against Lebanon-resident Jeff Bennett on Monday as Bennett picked up the win in Albuquerque’s 11-8 home victory.

The first two rounds of the draft were held Thursday night. Rounds 3-10 will be held today starting at noon CDT with the remaining rounds 11-40 starting at noon Saturday.
