Wilson County high school basketball fans will have a chance to take a trip down memory lane next Thursday during “A Salute to Wilson County Basketball Champions” at the James E. Ward Agricultural Center.
Hosted by former two-time state champion coach Bud Brandon, the event will feature Lebanon’s 1971 state finals win over Jackson Central-Merry. The Devilettes, then playing the 6-on-6 halfcourt style were coached by Brandon’s father, Hall of Famer Campbell Brandon, who was recently hired to take over Smith County’s program after 32 years in “retirement”.
That game will begin rolling at 6 p.m. The event will tip off at 4 with highlights from other Wilson County state championship games, including Bud Brandon’s 2006 and ’08 Wilson Central title teams as well as footage from Mt. Juliet girls and Friendship Christian’s boys.
Scenes from state tournament games featuring Wilson Central’s boys and Watertown’s boys will also be highlighted.
The games will loop throughout the evening on multiple screens.
“I’m in the process of trying to contact some of the players from these championship teams so they can be available to share some of their special memories of this exciting time in their basketball career,” Bud Brandon said. “Anyone’s help in contacting any of these players and inviting them to this event would be greatly appreciated.”
Brandon said interested former players can call event coordinator Jay [Doc] Holladay, one of the assistant coaches on Central’s title teams, at 504-9424 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Admission is free. Barbeque, baked potatoes and brownies will be served.
