Cumberland junior Antonio Manuel Marcelo was named an ITA All-American for the second straight year recently by the national governing body of collegiate tennis, one of 31 men’s players honored by the ITA.
Marcelo ended the year ranked sixth nationally in singles, the highest ranking of his career, after compiling a 16-5 overall mark for the Bulldogs, including 12-4 in dual matches at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. The Cascais, Portugal, native was 5-2 against ranked opponents, including a 7-6, 6-4, victory over Concordia’s Christian Wickenhauser in the round of 16 at the NAIA Championships.
The junior finished the season 13-10 overall in doubles with three different partners, but Marcelo and Rodriguez garnered a No. 21 final ranking in the poll, with the duo posting a 6-3 mark down the stretch of the campaign, including an 8-4 win versus Concordia’s 11th-ranked Wickenhauser and Jan Guler in the national tournament.
