Lebanon Lions 15-under all-stars win district

Local team moves on to play host to state tournament

CELINA – The Lebanon Lions 15-under Babe Ruth League all-stars edged Cookeville, 7-6, in a rematch to win the district title Sunday afternoon. 

The Lions took out Cookeville, 5-3, on Friday night and defeated Fentress County, 13-2, on Saturday to advance to the championship game. 

The Lions and Cookeville advance to the state tournament in Lebanon in two weeks. 

In the championship game, Cookeville got seven hits compared to four for Lebanon, but Cookeville stranded eight on base.

Lebanon All Stars Lions 15U would not relinquish the lead as Cookeville was unable to come back from a five-run second inning deficit.

Matthew Harper went a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate for the Lions. He doubled in the first inning to score Kolbe Sanders after Sanders singled to give the Lions a 1-0 lead.

In the second, Joseph Warren reached on an error that scored Shannon Mansfield. Will Adams then singled to third that scored Cidney Cozart on the next play. Three plays later, Warren and Adams scored on a Cookeville error at third. Ryan Smith stole home prior to the final out to give the Lions a 6-1 lead. 

Leading 6-5 in the sixth, Jared Bradshaw grounded out to second, scoring Harper after Harper stole second and third. 

Cookeville managed a final run in the seventh before two straight fly outs ended the game. 

Bradshaw pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Lions, striking out two and allowing five runs, six hits and two walks. John Dowless pitched the final 2 1/3 innings, striking out three and allowing one run, one hit and one walk.
