Life University in Georgia became an official member of the Mid-South Conference on Tuesday increasing the conference’s membership to nine full members.

Life will compete men’s basketball, women’s cross country, women’s swimming, women’s track & field and wrestling in 2014-15. Life expects to add women’s basketball and volleyball beginning in 2015-16 with further expansion of sports coming in the following years.

“The Mid-South Conference is honored to welcome Life University as our newest full member institution,” MSC Commissioner Eric Ward said.” We know that President Riekeman and the coaches, staff and student-athletes at Life University are eager to participate and compete in our conference. They were attracted to the Mid-South Conference based on the quality and character of our member institutions, as well as the caliber of competition across all sports.

“Life has a long history of academic and athletic success, and will only serve to enhance our reputation and competitiveness.”

Life athletics director John Barrett echoes Ward’s excitement about joining the MSC.

“We believe conference affiliation invigorates sports tradition,” said Barrett. “Season to season, year to year and decade to decade, playing the same core teams gives each team and sport a consistent gauge with which to measure itself and work to improve.”

Life – which is located in Marietta, Ga. – competed as an independent since returning to the NAIA in 2007.

Life joins Campbellsville (Ky.), Cumberland University, Cumberlands (Ky.), Georgetown (Ky.), Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), Pikeville (Ky.), Shawnee State (Ohio) and St. Catharine (Ky.) to make up the nine-team conference.

Cumberland University officials, however, announced last year it would make a move to the National Collegiate Athletic Association.

The Mid-South Conference participates in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and sponsors 22 championship sports. In addition to its nine full members, the conference is home to seven affiliate members.
