Seventy-four boaters cited: The TWRA's 6th annual "Operation Dry Water" -- a crackdown on unsafe boating activities leading up to the big July 4 weekend -- resulted on 74 citations being written.
Eight of those were for Boating Under the Influence, which carries serious penalties similar to Driving Under the Influence. That was down from 10 BUI citations issued during the same period last year.
The rest of the citations were for less-serious violations such as lack of approved life jackets on board for each passenger.
TWRA officials checked 2,100 vessels on waters across the state. In addition to writing 74 citations, they issued 59 warnings and assisted 36 boaters.
With the state's waters becoming more congested every year, boating safety becomes an increasing concern. The TWRA in recent years has made policing the waterways one of its top priorities, and the emphasis will continue through the summer boating season.
The state's boating rules and regulations can be reviewed in the Tennessee Boating Guide, available for free at most outdoors outlets.
Top shot: Danny Shaw missed two targets, but his score of 48 was good enough to take top honors in the Cedar City Gun Club's weekly trap shoot.
For information about the shoot or other club activities, contact Rob Mathis at the gun club.
Cedar City Straights: Wilson County youngsters interested in the shooting sports can sign up for an interscholastic trap-shooting team being organized by Ben Schade.
The Cedar City Straights is open to youngsters age nine through high school, and will compete in state, regional and national competitions.
Training will be held at the Cedar City Gun Club. For information call Schade at 615-478-8019.
Jacket reminder: With the summer boating season in full swing, the TWRA reminds boaters that one Coast Guard-approved floatation device per person must be aboard all boats.
Youngsters are required to wear a life jacket any time the boat is underway, including drifting or paddling. All persons are required to wear a life jacket when entering the waters immediately below Corps of Engineers dams.
