Harriman knocks Lebanon Nats into Dixie loser’s bracket

Nationals lose 8-5, will face Fairview on Friday

SWEETWATER — Harriman scored all its runs in the fourth and fifth innings Thursday to wipe out a Lebanon National lead and prevail 8-5 in the opening round of the Dixie Youth O-Zone state tournament.

Lebanon led 4-0 midway through the fourth before Harriman got three runs in the bottom of the fourth and five in the fifth to drop the Nationals into an 11:30 a.m. CDT elimination game Friday against Fairview, which lost to Madisonville.

The Lebanon American is to face Savannah in Thursday’s late tier of games at 7 p.m.

The Nationals  notched four hits – singles by Tyson Kelley, Chase Birdwell, Braxton Swann and Garrett Pope. Swann and Jayden Jobe each drove in a run.

J.D. Usrey pitched three no-hit innings with three walks and four strikeouts before Harriman's Brandon Turpin homered off Cade Tuschl in the fourth. Birdwell gave up the go-ahead run in the fifth and took the loss. Kolbe Gaines recorded the final three outs while surrendering a pair of scores.

Seth Cook drove in three Harriman runs on two singles while Turpin, the winning pitcher in relief, and Jack Simpson each finished with two RBI and Ethan Adkisson one.Babe Ruth 15-under state tournament opens Friday at Baird Park

The Babe Ruth 15-under state tournament will get underway Friday with a pair of games at Lebanon’s Charles Eskew Field in Baird Park.

Cookeville will take on Marshall County in the 6 p.m. opener with the winner catching Elizabethton at 11 a.m. Saturday and the loser falling into a 2 p.m. elimination game against the loser of Friday’s 8 p.m. contest between Tullahoma and Lebanon.

The Tullahoma-Lebanon winner will catch the Cookeville-Marshall County-Elizabethton winner at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The championship round is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Sunday with the “if necessary” game at 6 p.m. Monday.

The champion will advance to the Southeast Regional which begins July 30 in Varina, Va.
