Babe Ruth League games can drag on, especially when there’s no time limit.
But even without the customary one-hour, 45-minute limit, Lebanon right-hander Jacob Davis beat the clock and Tullahoma 5-1 in the 15-under state tournament Friday night at Baird Park’s Charles A. Eskew Field.
Davis allowed a tying run in the second inning on an RBI triple to right field by Shandon Hill, but otherwise held Tullahoma to four hits and no walks while striking out five as the Lions needed only 90 minutes to advance to today’s 5:30 p.m. winner’s bracket final against Marshall County, which outscored Cookeville 7-5 earlier Friday.
Eli Teel doubled for Lebanon while Will Adams, Jarred Bradshaw, Nolan Painter and Shannon Mansfield singled.
Cookeville will open today’s scheduled quadruple header with an 11 a.m. game against Elizabethton, followed by a 2 p.m. elimination contest between Tullahoma and Marshall County, whose winner will face the Cookeville-Elizabethton winner in the 8 p.m. nightcap.
The loser’s-bracket final is set for 3 p.m. Sunday [Lebanon would play here if the Lions lose tonight] with the winner advancing to the final round at 5:30. The “if necessary” game would be played at 6 p.m. Monday.
