According to a recent survey, there are about 826,000 fishermen in Tennessee and 375,000 hunters, and they have a $1.5 billion annual impact on the state’s economy.
There are also around 1.9 million “wildlife watchers” who contribute another $943 million.
Then there is the state’s booming boating industry, which generates approximately $1 billion a year in manufacturing/user revenue.
Fishing generates approximately 17,500 jobs and hunting generates 8,800 more.
State and local tax revenue from the outdoor pursuits amounts to $167 million annually.
Hunting, fishing, boating and “watchable wildlife” is managed by the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency whose operating budget is user-funded and includes no revenue from state tax payers.
Trap shoot: Mike Isaacs won the weekly trap shoot at the Cedar City Gun Club, with a round of 45.
Billy Robb took Veteran honors with a 43, Kerry Hale won Class A (44) and Jerry Swords took Class D (34).
Local trap team: Wilson County youngsters interested in the shooting sports can sign up for an interscholastic trap-shooting team being organized by Ben Schade.
The Cedar City Straights is open to youngsters age nine through high school, and will compete in state, regional and national competitions.

The deadline for applying for a permit for this October’s elk hunt was July 23. Information about the hunt and how to apply is posted on tnwildlife.org
In addition to the five permits (including a youth hunt tag) issued by random draw, a sixth permit will be auctioned off on eBay.
The sixth annual hunt will be held Oct. 20-24.
