Lions open region play with 5-1 win

VARINA, Va. — The Lebanon Lions opened Babe Ruth Southeast Region round-robin play Wednesday with a 5-1 win over Arlington, Va., at Varina Sports Complex.

Leadoff batter Will Adams and No. 8 hitter Jake Davis each had two hits for the Lions, who scored single runs in the first, fourth and fifth innings and broke it open with two in the bottom of the sixth.

Starter Jarred Bradshaw allowed an unearned run in the fifth inning. He allowed six hits and three walks while striking out four in five innings to pick up the win. John Doweless surrendered a hit and two walks over the final two frames for the save.

Ryan Smith doubled for Lebanon while Matthew Harper and Nolan Painter singled. Smith, Davis and Shannon Mansfield each drove in a run.

Lebanon will play two games Thursday as the Lions work their way through the four-game round-robin. They will take on Lumber River West [N.C.] at 9 a.m. CDT and Tallassee [Ala.] at 3 p.m.

Pool play will wrap up with a single game Friday morning. The top two finishers in each of the five-team pools will advance to a single-elimination semifinal Saturday with the championship game to follow.

The champion will advance to the 13-15 World Series in Longview, Wash., Aug. 20-27.
