Mo’ne Davis has really hit the big time.
The 13-year-old Little League pitcher with the 70-mph fastball — who just happens to be a girl — has already been on TVs across America as part of ESPN’s coverage of the Little League World Series.
And now Davis has landed the coveted cover of Sports Illustrated magazine, becoming the first Little League player to do so.
“Last week, this week, maybe next week, she’s owned the sports conversation,” Sports Illustrated manager editor Chris Stone said. “How often do you get to say this about a 13-year-old girl? It’s the easiest type of story to identify as a cover story.”
Davis became the first female pitcher to throw a shutout in Little League World Series history when her Taney Dragons from Philadelphia defeated Nashville, 4-0. Before that, she threw a shutout in the Mid-Atlantic finals.
And she’s expected to be back on the mound Wednesday when her team faces Las Vegas. For the sake of the Dragons, hopefully their star pitcher can avoid the so-called SI cover jinx.
