HARTSVILLE — While star running back Kenyon Harper sat out Friday’s game with knee surgery, quarterback Marquel Claiborne and the rest of the Trousdale County Yellow Jackets stepped up in a 34-12 win over Sycamore at John Kerr Field.

Harper injured his knee in the first half of last week’s loss to Macon County, underwent surgery Thursday and is expected to miss a month.

But Claiborne stepped up with two touchdown runs and two scoring passes as the Yellow Jackets squared their season record at 1-1 going into next Friday’s 7 p.m. District 8-A opener at Watertown’s brand-new Robinson Stadium.

Zach Blackwell ignited the Jackets by returning the opening kickoff 42 yards to the Sycamore 32-yard line, from where fullback Chase Dallas took it from there on the first play from scrimmage for a 7-0 lead.

Claiborne then scored on runs of 9 and 4 yards for a 20-0 lead midway through the second quarter. He threw 56 yards to Blackwell for a score midway through the third quarter and 13 to freshman tight end Braison Raney, making his first catch in his first varsity game, early in the fourth.

Sycamore countered with a 4-yard scoring hookup from Jacob Gibbs to Waylon Stotts late in the first half to draw within 20-6 and a 15-yard scoring run from Darius James in the closing seconds as the War Eagles fell to 2-2.

While both teams presented balanced offenses, the Yellow Jackets’ stayed on the field much longer, 31:27 to 16:33.
