Wilson Bank & Trust contributes to Second Harvest

After taking part in an area-wide penny drive over the past few months, Wilson Bank & Trust recently presented Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee with a contribution exceeding $7,000.

(Submitted to The Democrat) Wilson Bank & Trust recently presented Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee with a check for more than $7,000 following this year’s change drive. After taking part in an area-wide penny drive over the past few months, Wilson Bank & Trust recently presented Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee with a contribution exceeding $7,000. 

The contribution and others made during the campaign will help efforts to feed hungry neighbors in Wilson County.

"We are grateful to Wilson Bank & Trust for their continued support of our mission through the Ms. Cheap Penny Drive," said Jaynee Day, president and CEO of Second Harvest Food Bank of Middle Tennessee. "Creative, successful partnerships like the Penny Drive enable Second Harvest and our network of partner agencies to provide hope and sustenance to our neighbors in need across Middle and West Tennessee."

The total bank donation included money from jars displayed at all Wilson Bank & Trust branches; change collected by employees and customers on their own; and a matching corporate donation from Wilson Bank & Trust. Between early November and the end of January, each of Wilson Bank’s 25 full-service offices in Wilson, DeKalb, Davidson, Rutherford, Smith, Sumner and Trousdale counties collected change and provided collection cans for individuals to take home and return.

"I so appreciate Wilson Bank & Trust's role in making the Ms. Cheap Penny Drive for Second Harvest such a success, with our total reaching a record $47,946.51 this year,” said Mary Hance, also known as Ms. Cheap. “Not only did the bank contribute substantially to the drive, it served as the catalyst and facilitator to get hundreds of other businesses and individuals involved in helping Second Harvest and their network of more than 450 partner agencies provide food and other resources to those struggling with hunger throughout 46 counties in Middle and West Tennessee. This penny drive is about awareness of hunger as well as about raising money, and the enthusiastic support and wide geographic reach of Wilson Bank & Trust, was a huge boost. I am already thinking about next year and how we can build on this wonderful partnership for another successful drive."

In Wilson County, Second Harvest partners with 20 agencies to serve children, families and seniors struggling with hunger. Last year, Second Harvest distributed more than 850,000 pounds of food in Wilson County through its partner agencies and feeding programs, including more than 25,000 back packs to children in need.  Second Harvest's back pack program provides easy-to-prepare food for at-risk children on weekends and during school breaks when other resources are not available.

Wilson Bank & Trust became a partner Ms. Cheap’s annual Second Harvest benefit in 2012 as part of a series of charitable giving programs to help celebrate the bank’s 25th anniversary.
