Georgia-Pacific’s Lebanon facility named Volunteer STAR award winner

Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development Commissioner Burns Phillips announced the Georgia-Pacific facility in Lebanon was chosen to receive the Volunteer Safety Through Accountability and Recognition award.

“The Georgia-Pacific facility located in Lebanon has met the evaluation standards required to receive this award by proving their ability to provide an excellent safety and health management system," said Phillips, who presented the Volunteer STAR award recently at the company’s Lebanon facility at 1001 Maddox Simpson Pkwy. “It is evident that Georgia-Pacific and the employees of the Lebanon facility are extremely dedicated to maintaining a safe and healthy workplace.”

The Volunteer STAR award is the state’s highest honor for workplace safety and health and a nationally recognized program. The Volunteer STAR is patterned after the OSHA Voluntary Protection Program and recognizes the best in safety and health programming and performance.

 “Every employee at Georgia-Pacific Lebanon is fully committed to always being mindful of safety and keeping a watchful eye on potential risks, not only in the workplace, but in our daily lives as well,” said Rob Streeter, general manager of the facility.  “We are proud of the work of our collective team that keeps us focused on looking out for each other every day and helped us achieve recertification.” 

Georgia-Pacific has about 65 employees at the Lebanon facility engaged in the manufacture of corrugated sheets. The location was originally certified as a Volunteer STAR site in 2010. It’s the Georgia-Pacific Lebanon team’s first recertification effort.

For the three-year period from 2011-13, the site was:

• three-year total case incidence rate was 0.46.

• 84 percent below the current Bureau of Labor Statistics industry average.

• three-year days away from work and restricted activity and/or transfer incidence rate was 0.46.

• 74 percent below the current BLS industry averages.

The site experienced only one recordable injury during the three-year period.

A plaque of recognition is awarded to the STAR recipient, as is a flag that can be flown at the site. The company is also permitted to use the Volunteer STAR logo on its correspondence and company documents.

The standard for participation in the STAR program is the confirmation of a company’s safety and health program, which helps reduce accidents and injuries.
