A Wilson middle school band is competing for up to $15,000.

West Wilson Middle School is in the running for a $15,000 grand prize through the Rack Room Shoes "Gift of Music" contest after a band parent learned about the contest and submitted an entry video.

The top four schools to receive the most votes in the Internet-based contest will each receive a $15,000 grant.

"One of my band parents found out about it and entered us. I didn't know about until this parent signed us up," said Band Director Jon Rosenthal.

The alert parent submitted a video of the beginner band during a holiday performance.

Rosenthal said anyone interested in helping the cause can vote once per day now through Jan. 11.

If West Wilson Middle is chosen for one of the grand prizes, the money will go toward instruments for the band, according to Rosenthal.

There are about 150 students enrolled in the band this year, and Rosenthal said that number is growing.

"The biggest priority is instruments," he said. "We are short on some, like tubas for example, and we could use the money to purchase new instruments to beef up inventory and to replace older instruments. It's going to be more of an issue next year than it is right now."
