A school resource officer confiscated a gun from a Wilson County middle school student Monday after another student alerted the SRO of the weapon on campus, Wilson County Director of Schools Mike Davis said.
Davis said the unloaded handgun was found at West Wilson Middle School in Mt. Juliet. He said a message was sent to West Wilson parents, telling them a small handgun was confiscated from a student.
Davis said the student was taken into custody and will not be returning to the school.
"A student went to the SRO with the necessary information," Davis said.
He said longtime West Wilson Middle School SRO David Bennett handled the situation.
"Another student went to the SRO and told him about the gun," Davis said. "The student was removed from class, taken to his locker for his backpack, then taken to a conference room, where he was searched. The gun was not loaded, but he had the means to load it."
Davis said the incident perfectly illustrated why SROs are invaluable in the schools.
"The SRO was very effective," he said. "The student had enough confidence in him to go to him and report to him about it. [Bennett] handled it well."
