MT. JULIET –  Police charged a Mt. Juliet musician with vehicular homicide after a deadly crash Friday night, according to Metro Nashville police.

Metro police said Robert Todd Harrell, 41, of Secretariat Drive in Mt. Juliet, was charged with vehicular homicide by intoxication after a crash late Friday night on Interstate 40 near Hermitage claimed the life of Paul Howard Shoulders Jr., 47, of Nashville.

Harrell is the bassist for the group 3 Doors Down.

According to police, Harrell was driving a 2011 Cadillac CTS westbound on I-40 at a high rate of speed when the car clipped a 2003 Ford F-150 pickup driven by Shoulders.

The impact sent the pickup truck out of control, into a guardrail, down an embankment and upside down. The report said Shoulders was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was taken to Vanderbilt Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Harrell's Cadillac struck a retaining wall, went a quarter mile and then stopped, according to the report. When given a field sobriety test, he appeared to be under the influence of intoxicants, according to the report.

The report said he acknowledged consuming hard cider and taking Lortab and Xanax. Police then got a search warrant for a blood sample from Harrell.

He was also charged with bringing controlled substances into the jail, police said. In the booking room, Davidson County sheriff's deputies found a plastic bag concealed in Harrell's sock with eight Xanax, 24 Oxycodone and four Oxymorphone pills, according to the report.

Harrell is jailed in lieu of $100,000 bond.

The band acknowledged the incident on its website Saturday.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Howard Shoulders Jr. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and friends at this difficult time," the 3 Doors Down website said.
