A former Mt. Juliet football player was shot early Friday morning.

Vaughn Cornelia, 20, was one of two people shot when a confrontation escalated to gunfire near Broughton and Jefferson Streets shortly before 3 a.m. in Savannah, Ga.

Police said as many as 100 people were present at the time.

A Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department officer was near the intersection when he heard several shots fired. He moved into the crowd to find Cornelia being placed in a car.

He advised that an ambulance was in route and began first aid for Cornelia as other officers tended to the unruly crowd and secured the scene.

Police are still investigating the shooting.

Vaughn, a 2011 Mt. Juliet High School graduate, was a standout player for the Golden Bears, ranking 29th in the state his senior year. He’s now a sophomore player at Savannah State University.
