A 5-year-old boy died shortly after arriving at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after he was struck by a large pickup truck Friday morning in Mt. Juliet.
Police said the incident happened at about 10:30 a.m. just off Main Street near W. Division Street in Mt. Juliet. According to police spokesperson Tyler Chandler, the driver, a 73-year-old man, didn’t see the child while backing up in a Ford F250 truck.
Chandler said Wilson Emergency Management Agency paramedics responded quickly and took the child by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center emergency room. He said the child suffered critical, life-threatening injuries and died upon arriving at the hospital.
Police didn't release the names of the child or driver.
“Our crash reconstructionist is on the scene investigating the crash,” Chandler said at the time. “More information will be released once the investigation is complete."
"This is a sad day for our community," Mt. Juliet police Chief James Hambrick said. "Thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and the first responders who came to the incident."
