MT. JULIET — The success Mt. Juliet’s softball and baseball teams have enjoyed in recent years spilled over into college scholarships Wednesday as four Lady Bears and a Golden Bear put their autographs on the dotted lines.
Pitcher Shelby Morris is headed to East Tennessee State on a softball scholarship while third baseman Hannah Irwin is going to Belmont, right-fielder Shelby Barrett to Middle Tennessee State and left-fielder Caroline Mason to Lipscomb.
Baseball pitcher/infielder Josh Cotham will join Mason at Lipscomb.
“I couldn’t be more proud of these four young ladies,†softball coach Kacey Pedigo said. “They are an integral part of what we have done the last three seasons.
“Three-year reocrd with these ladies is 112-37, state runners up the last two years, district and region champs the last two years. But there is more to come this year.â€
Mason was believed to be the state’s top home-run hitter last year with 19. She batted .408 with a .658 on-base percentage. She fielded .996.
Barrett batted .336 with a .502 on-base percentage and .998 fielding percentage.
Cotham led the Golden Bears with a .365 average, 10 home runs and 12 doubles and was second in runs batted in with 37. On the mound, the right-hander went 4-4 with a 1.58 earned-run average with 56 strikeouts in 48 2/3 innings. The National Honor Society student with a 4.2 weighted grade-point average helped Mt. Juliet go 34-12 with a District 9-AAA championship and sectional appearance last spring.
“Great kid, very good this season leading us in several offensive categories,†Purvis said. “End of the season he was one of our better pitchers. Looking for another big season out of him this year.â€
