Wilson County’s application process for the 2013 Governor’s Volunteer Star Awards is now in full swing.

The Governor’s Volunteer Stars Awards is a Volunteer Tennessee initiative that recognizes exceptional volunteers from each of the 95 counties in Tennessee. The initiative is designed to recognize community members who truly make a difference.

Each year, Tennessee counties nominate one outstanding youth, ages 25 and under, and one outstanding adult volunteer to be honored as the Volunteer Star from that area. This is the sixth year for the awards.

Nominees are determined based on the community’s needs of the volunteer service performed, initiative taken to perform the service, creativity to solve a community problem and impact of the volunteer service on the community.

This year’s committee for the GVSA includes Ken Sweeney, Dakota Weatherford with the county mayor’s office, United Way President John McMillin, Lisa Dickson with Wilson County schools and Jared Felkins, the Democrat’s editor. This committee is in place to narrow down and select the top nominees from the area.

The 2012 winners met in Franklin on March 4 to be recognized, with Sherry’s Run, an organization that benefits those affected by cancer, representing the adults from Wilson County and Jessica Fults as the youth nominee.

Nomination forms can be found on the Wilson County website at wilsoncountytn.com or by contacting a committee member or the county mayor’s office at 615-444-1383.

Volunteers may be nominated by anyone.

Nominators would fill out questions on the nominee such as:

What makes the honoree an outstanding volunteer?

What agency(s) do they serve with? How long have they served with this agency?

What type of service do they perform?

How does their service impact their community?

What makes the honoree unique?

Nomination forms can be filled out and mailed to Volunteer Star Awards c/o Ken Sweeney, 517 Cloverhill Lane, Lebanon, TN 37090, or scanned and emailed to kfsweeney@att.net.

The application deadline is November 22.
