Get a gift that wasn't just right for Christmas?

Many people hit stores Thursday to return presents given to them that didn't quite fit the bill.

Noted as the biggest return day of the year, stores prepared for large numbers visiting the customer service desk on Thursday.

And local businesses followed the trend.

Walmart in Lebanon experienced most of its volume in the afternoon. Assistant Manager Donna Wheeler said the morning of Dec. 26 sees most people taking advantage of after-Christmas sales.

"Right now what [customers] are doing is coming in to buy the stuff that's marked down, and they come in in the afternoon for returns," said Wheeler. "Everybody knows that all the Christmas items are on sale, so they will come in to buy those items."

She mentioned toys, wrapping paper and other Christmas items such as the Christmas gift packs as popular items customers will snag.

Over at Academy Sports in Mt. Juliet, Store Manager Chris Howard said his store's returns were "probably on par, about average."

"Sometimes the returns lag for two or three days when the holiday falls in the middle of the week," said Howard.

He said Thursday that he had seen "a huge amount of people using gift cards" that they received as gifts since many people have the day after Christmas off.

"They can't wait to come and purchase something with that gift card," Howard said.

He said the number of returns in his store would probably pick up by Saturday, when many customers will be on their normal day off.

Amazon, which has a distribution center in Lebanon, also deals with returned merchandise.

"After-Christmas returns are a normal part of retail business," said Julie Law, a spokesperson for Amazon. "We work to offer the easiest options possible for our customers. Items shipped between Nov. 1, 2013 and Dec. 31, 2013 may be returned until Jan. 31,2014 for a full refund, subject to other returns restrictions."
